A passive speaker is a speaker without it's own audio amplifier. Basically, almost any speaker you don't have to plug into the wall or put batteries in is a passive speaker.

Non-passive speakers require power because they have their own amplifiers built in, and amplifiers need power. Most (but not all) computer speakers are non-passive, while most of the loudspeakers you use with your stereo are passive.
